Social Networking lesson plan
Name: Michael Karlin
Lesson Title: Digital Pen Pals
Introduction: In this lesson students at my current school in Barranquilla, Colombia will connect with students from my former school in Gardner, KS. While this lesson is specific to the schools I have worked in, any educator could use this activity provided they have connections at two different schools. This is a year long activity, requiring weekly updates from students on both ends. Students will share their lives via flicker, blogging, facebook, and skype and in the process gain a better understanding of different cultures.
Content area and grade: Middle School Computer Technology
Objectives:
NET-S Standards:
Relative Advantage: By using digital tools to interact with students from another culture, students will gain a more thorough understanding of the lives and experiences of those students.
Timeline: This project will take place over the course of a year with weekly assignments throughout the course.
Materials: One computer with an internet connection per student and access to flickr, facebook, skype, and edublogs.org
Grouping Strategies: As this will take place in the computer lab, each student will have access to their own computer without difficulty.
Learning Activities:
Examples:
Assessment: Students will be assessed weekly on their blog (posting their own and commenting on 2 students from the sister school). Additionally, they will be assessed on their photo posts to the flickr group and their participation in the monthly skype sessions. Finally, each student will be required to make one weekly post to our facebook page (which will be shared with students from the sister school). All posts most be respectful and reflect yourself and the school in a positive light. Failure to do so will result in an immediate conference with your parents and a 0 for the weekly assignment.
